Because the style brings the coat to the hips, when you sit down there's a lot of tension at the base of the zipper... the coat fits with ample room everywhere so it's not a fit issue. It's simply a poor design. A double zipper would have made sense so you can make more space for sitting like a lot of other parkas have, or perhaps a snap that would offer relief to the zipper. I would avoid unless you are willing to unzip to sit or hike the coat up to waist level to sit.
